Almost 30 years after the first theoretical studies, começam a tomar forma os primeiros devices que representam uma nova forma de eletrônica: the spintronics, which explores not the electric charge, but another property, the spin (or direction of rotation) of electrons.

Companies from the United States, da França e do Japão devem lançar em um ano as versões comerciais de memórias magnéticas de computer, already with spintronics, capable of storing and transmitting information and reduce by half the energy loss.

“The teletransmissores based on spin transfer must also arrive soon, in one or two years, aprimorando a transmission de sinais por micro-ondas”, said the French physicist Albert Fert, a researcher at the National Centre for scientific research (CNRS), of France.

One of the Nobel Prize in physics 2007, Fert participated in the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on synchrotron radiation, held at Laboratório Nacional de Luz Síncrotron (LNLS), in Campinas.

Fert and German physicist Peter Grünberg received the Nobel prize because of the simultaneous identification, in 1988, the giant magnetoresistance, a quantum mechanical effect observed in composite materials by magnetic and non-magnetic materials which reduces the electrical resistance.

This effect, It was applied already technologically from 1997, only 11 years after its discovery in the laboratory, permitiu a ampliação da memória de computers e celulares, breaking the barrier of gigabytes (GB).

The giant magnetoresistance is the basis of spintronics, that allows the generation of non-volatile memories and even more powerful than the current, as the IBM, of the United States, NEC, Sony and Hitachi, of Japan, and French Thales should introduce publicly soon.

From the lab to the product

“These new concepts of physics are being implemented quickly in new products, Unlike what we see, for example, in the fridge, cuja technology básica é muito antiga,” said Fert.

One of the reasons is the long joint work between research centres and businesses.

The French Thales Group is one of the funders of the laboratory of Fert, beside the CNRS, Since 1994. “Since the beginning of our research in this area the company is us,” said.

The ESPCA is a mode of scientific event launched in 2009 by the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa de São Paulo (FAPESP) to finance the organisation of short courses in advanced search in different areas of knowledge.
