A Wikipedia está montando um esforço para recrutar mais women colaboradoras, depois que uma Search revelou que mais de 85% articles are written by men. The Wikimedia Foundation, non-profit organization that manages the online encyclopedia, established the goal of achieving 25% collaborating for women by 2015.

wikipediaSecond a organização, the initiative is not intended to generate gender equality, mas é um esforço para melhorar a quality da Wikipedia. "We want to ensure that the online encyclopedia is as good as it could be", said Sue Gardner, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation.

According To Sue, with so many subjects represented in the encyclopedia, the gender disparity is often revealed in emphasis for each theme. A topic usually restricted to teen girls is described in a few paragraphs compared to long articles of male subjects.

A maioria dos colaboradores são homens jovens que possuem habilidade com technology. According to Sue, There are no plans to recruit women actively, but just make Wikipedia more "cozy" for those interested in collaborating.
