Republic of Colombia Wins GSMA's Government Leadership Award

liderancaThe GSMA has submitted to his Excellency the Minister of communications of the Republic of Colombia, Diego Molano, the prestigious annual Government Leadership Award in the mobile communications industry. A premiação reconhece os avanços significativos empreendidos pelo governo colombiano para transformar seu país num dos mais importantes pólos de development of Latin America, now recognised by its booming economy, competitive business environment, innovative Government and many attractions to investors.

As the fourth largest country in Latin America and one of the Nations most populous continent with more than 46 million inhabitants, the Republic of Colombia is witnessing a revolution in your business scenario thanks to mobile communications. Its thriving market penetration rates now displays unimaginable a decade ago. In 2011, internet connections has doubled to six million, almost half of them is made by mobile telephony.

“The Colombian Government has made universal access to broadband internet a priority, using our strategy called Digital Lives. We want to offer to Colombians more opportunities through mobile telephony, including best educational indices, comprehensive health and more job opportunities”, said Minister Molano. “The program's goal is to quadruple Digital Lives the internet connections in the country in four years. The rapid expansion of the internet and mobile telephony is essential to our economic growth.”

“The Republic of Colombia has positioned the mobility and communication at the heart of its economic and social agenda, with a new and innovative communications strategy”, commented Tom Phillips, Director of regulatory area of GSMA. “In addition, the Colombia is a leader in the management of which has become now one of the world's scarce resources more, the band spectrum. In recognition of his dedication to mobile communications and the exemplary vision his Government, the GSMA is pleased to present the Government Leadership Award 2012 the Government of the Republic of Colombia.”

The Republic of Colombia was the first country in Latin America to license the spectrum band 2.6 GHz and one of the countries in the region that first allocated spectrum to Mobile Broadband 700 MHz globally, with the creation of a guide of spectrum and plans to duplicate the spectrum allocated over the next three years. The Government of the country has been working with the international committees to ensure that the future use of harmonised spectrum by region. The Government also acknowledged that the growth of mobile data traffic has become essential to allow wider access and stimulate competition.

The judging Committee of Governmental leadership award this year was the following people:

The award was presented in Government Mobility Forum, an annual event in which more than 450 representantes de governos e órgãos reguladores do mundo inteiro se reúnem com a indústria para discutir questões regulatórias específicas relacionadas ao development das comunicações móveis. The Forum is a key event of the GSMA Ministerial Programme which takes place every year in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress of GSMA. In 2012, the Ministerial Program attracted more than 140 delegations from all over the world.
